Early Years

Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage at High View School. We are delighted to welcome you and your child to the very beginning of their school journey. Our aim is to provide a happy, nurturing environment that feels like a home from home, where children feel safe, valued and confident to be themselves.

The Early Years is a vital stage in your child’s development, and we are committed to making their first experiences of school positive, supportive and full of joy.

A Home from Home

We understand that starting school is a big step for both children and families. In EYFS, we work hard to create an environment that feels warm, familiar and welcoming. Our classrooms are calm, caring spaces where children are encouraged to:

  • Feel secure and settled
  • Build trusting relationships with adults
  • Develop independence at their own pace
  • Express themselves with confidence

By creating a home from home atmosphere, children are able to relax, engage and learn happily each day.

Learning Through Play

Children learn best when they are actively involved and enjoying their learning. In EYFS, learning takes place through play, first‑hand experiences and meaningful interactions. Through play, children:

  • Explore their interests and curiosities
  • Develop communication and social skills
  • Practise problem‑solving and creativity
  • Grow in confidence and resilience

We carefully plan activities and environments both indoors and outdoors to support learning in a fun and purposeful way.

The EYFS Curriculum

Our curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and covers seven areas of learning:

Prime Areas

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

All learning is child‑centred and tailored to meet individual needs, ensuring every child is supported to thrive.

A Safe, Caring and Inclusive Environment

Your child’s wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. We provide:

  • A safe, secure and inclusive setting
  • Clear routines to help children feel confident
  • Positive behaviour support based on kindness and respect

Strong relationships are key in EYFS, and we pride ourselves on knowing every child as an individual.

Working in Partnership with Parents and Carers

We believe that the best outcomes for children come from strong home‑school partnerships. We work closely with parents and carers by:

  • Sharing learning and progress regularly
  • Encouraging open and honest communication
  • Welcoming parent involvement

By working together, we ensure continuity between home and school, strengthening that home‑from‑home feel.

Settling In and Transition

We support children carefully as they settle into EYFS by:

  • Offering visits and transition opportunities
  • Providing consistent routines and familiar adults
  • Taking time to understand each child’s needs and interests

Our goal is for every child to feel happy, secure and excited to come to school.
