Writing

At High View School, we believe that writing is a foundational life skill that enables children to communicate ideas, express creativity and succeed across the curriculum. We are committed to developing confident, capable writers who enjoy writing and take pride in their work.

Our Understanding of Writing

We recognise that writing is a complex process made up of several interlinked components. Effective writing requires children to develop and apply skills in:

  • Transcription – handwriting and spelling
  • Composition – forming, organising and communicating ideas
  • Spelling knowledge – applying phonics, patterns and rules
  • Handwriting – fluency, legibility and presentation

At High View School, these elements are taught explicitly and practised regularly, ensuring children build secure foundations as their writing develops.

Writing Inspired by High-Quality Texts

We believe that children write best when they are engaged, inspired and motivated. Writing opportunities are carefully planned and grow naturally from children’s interaction with high-quality texts, including:

  • Stories, picture books and novels
  • Poetry and non-fiction
  • Texts reflecting diverse voices, cultures and experiences

Through reading and exploring rich texts, children develop:

  • A strong vocabulary
  • An understanding of structure and language choices
  • A sense of purpose and audience in their writing

A Structured Yet Creative Writing Process

High View School acknowledges that writing can feel challenging for many children. Teachers support pupils by:

  • Breaking the writing process into small, achievable steps
  • Modelling writing clearly and explicitly
  •  Providing guided and supported practice
  • Offering timely feedback and celebration of success

While structure and skills are carefully taught, we are passionate about keeping creativity alive. Children are encouraged to experiment with ideas, take risks with language and develop their own writing voice.

Writing Across the Curriculum

Writing is not limited to English lessons. We provide frequent and meaningful writing opportunities across the wider curriculum, allowing children to apply their skills in different contexts. This approach helps children understand that writing is purposeful and relevant, strengthening both learning and retention.

Our Vision for Writing

At High View School, our aim is for children to:

  • Develop confidence and independence as writers
  • Master the essential skills of writing step by step
  • Enjoy writing and express themselves creatively
  • Apply their writing skills across all areas of learning

By combining high expectations, careful teaching and genuine enjoyment, we support every child on their journey to becoming a successful writer.
