Maths
At Highview School, our aim is for all children to develop a strong understanding of mathematics, build confidence and enjoy learning. We want pupils to become fluent in key mathematical skills, able to reason clearly and solve problems effectively.
Our maths curriculum is designed to be ambitious and inclusive, ensuring that all children, regardless of background or starting point, can achieve success. We place a strong emphasis on clear structure, revisiting key ideas and making connections so that children remember more over time and are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we aim to develop children’s early number sense and mathematical understanding through purposeful play and everyday experiences, laying the foundations for future learning.
To implement our curriculum we follow the White Rose Maths programme to support the delivery of our maths curriculum. This ensures learning is carefully sequenced, broken down into small steps and builds progressively as children move through the school.
Teaching and Learning
All maths lessons follow a consistent structure:
-
I Do – The teacher introduces and models new learning clearly, using mathematical language, practical equipment and visual representations.
-
We Do – Children work with the teacher to practise and explore concepts together, developing understanding and confidence.
-
You Do – Children then apply their learning independently, allowing teachers to assess understanding and provide support or challenge where needed.
This structure helps children feel secure in their learning and supports them in becoming confident, independent learners.
Steps for Success
Each maths lesson includes clear Steps for Success. These help children understand:
-
What they are learning
-
The steps they need to follow to be successful
-
How to approach tasks and solve problems
By making the learning journey clear, Steps for Success support children to stay focused, build confidence and take ownership of their learning.
Supporting All Learners
Carefully planned scaffolding is used to ensure that learning is well matched to the needs of all children. This may include:
-
Practical resources and visual supports
-
Guided examples and sentence stems
-
Additional adult support or guided practice
-
Further challenge for pupils ready to deepen their understanding
Scaffolding is gradually removed as children become more confident, enabling them to work independently.
EYFS Mathematics
In the EYFS, mathematics is taught through a balance of adult‑led learning and child‑initiated play. The indoor and outdoor environment is used purposefully to develop mathematical understanding, with opportunities for children to explore number, patterns, shape, measure and problem solving through everyday activities and play.
Mathematical language is modelled and encouraged throughout the day, helping children make sense of maths in real‑life contexts.
Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving
Across the school, maths teaching focuses on:
-
Fluency – developing quick and accurate recall of key facts and methods
-
Reasoning – explaining thinking using mathematical language
-
Problem solving – applying skills in a range of contexts
Children are encouraged to talk about their maths and justify their answers.
As a result of our maths curriculum at Highview School:
-
Children are confident and positive learners of mathematics
-
Pupils develop strong understanding and resilience
-
Learning is purposeful, inclusive and well matched to individual needs
-
Children leave each year group prepared for the next stage of their learning
