Welcome to the Governors’ page for High View School. We would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about ourselves, our roles and our aims.
Our Governing Body comprises of sixteen governors, all of whom bring different skills to High View School; consisting of four parent Governors, one Local Authority Governor, three staff Governors which includes our Head Teacher, five co-opted Governors and four associate Governors.
Governors are volunteers who give their time and commitment to what we hope, is a very rewarding role and experience. Governors are also subject to an OFSTED inspection at the same time and in the same way as the school would be inspected.
To be an effective governing body in challenging and supporting the school so that weaknesses are tackled decisively and our statutory responsibilities are met.
We will endeavour to do this by:
- Holding at least one meeting per month across the three separate committees ie. Full Governors, Resources and Learning & Standards.
- Appointing or remove the clerk.
- Electing a Chair and Vice Chair.
- Advising all parents of any parent governor vacancies, all staff or staff governor vacancies and to appoint community governors.
- Annually adopt the SEF.
- Setting dates of meetings for the year ahead.
- Noting term dates for the academic year and agree the occasional non pupil days.
- Receiving Head Teacher reports.
- Reviewing and monitoring examination/national test results.
- Review the level of exclusions.
- Monitor attendance of pupils/staff/governors.
- Reviewing, adopting and monitoring our Freedom of Information Policy.
- Agreeing Curriculum Plans.
- Setting pupil performance targets.
- If required, consider the suspension of a governor.
- Inducting new governors.
- Encouraging governors to visit school and to review, adopting and monitoring a governors’ visit policy and feedback procedure.
- Reviewing, adopting and monitoring the procedures for dealing with complaints from parents/carers.
- Reviewing, approving and monitoring the School Improvement Plan.
- Annually elect governors for the following responsibilities:-
With regards to: English, Mathematics, Equality, SEN (Special Educational Needs), Looked After Children, Child Protection and Healthy & Safety, we will:
- Ensure at least 3 governors are appointed and trained to complete the Head Teacher’s Performance Management.
- The meeting is quaorate with no less than 4 people attending.
- Maintain and update annually a file of pecuniary interest declarations.
- Review, adopt and monitor a governors’ expenses policy and curriculum policy.
- Review annually the delegation of functions and committee structure.
- Organise support and training for governors.
As you can see there is a great deal expected of all governing bodies, which is why it is important that responsibilities are shared.
How do we achieve this?
The full Governing Body meet four times a year. We have two sub committees (Resources and Learning & Standards). Our Resources committee formally meet four times a year and Learning and Standards committee meet three times a year. (However, the Learning & Standards committee members frequently visit classes and talk to children and teachers about learning).
What are the responsibilities of each committee?
The Resources Committee deals mainly with finance, (budget setting, approval, planning and monitoring), health and safety, safeguarding, premises maintenance, appointments/staffing, performance management and pay reviews.
The Learning & Standards Committee deals with monitoring and evaluating our School Improvement Plan, pupils progress and attainment, curriculum related policies and standards, target setting and extended services provision.
We also have a number of link governors. These are governors who have taken on extra responsibility and visit school during school hours. They meet with the subject co-ordinators throughout the year and observe learning, behaviour and standards related to their particular area of responsibility and report back to the Full Governing Body each term.
There are a number of other committees, but these only meet if required eg for performance management, exclusions, complaints or for disciplinary purposes. Where possible we join in with the fun events too which take place throughout the year, Christmas time, class assemblies and performances being the most special. I think the most important thing to mention is that we have a very committed governing body. We can all give varying degrees of our time due to work and family commitments, but working as a team with everyone taking just a little bit extra responsibility makes us effective.
